Legacy

Legacy...what will your legacy say about you?

"What you do today determines who you become tomorrow. And what you do each year determines the legacy you leave.  Your word shapes your character. Your character influences your actions. Your actions influence others. The lives you touch and the impact you have determine the story that will be told about you tomorrow.
Jon Gordon

For those of you that may not know my background, I grew up in the cutting horse industry, an industry in the heart of Parker County. I was blessed with many years of riding horses and being around some amazing Cowboys and Cowgirls that have created a culture in an industry that exemplifies heart. My family was connected to a Brock family long before I ever realized it through the cutting horse industry - The Welch FamilyWhitney Welch and three of her friends, all Brock ISD students, were killed on December 19, 1998, the result of an encounter with a drunk driver. It was a devastating loss. Through this loss, the Welch family created a memorial scholarship in the National Youth Cutting Horse Association.  "Whitney exemplified the true meaning of sportsmanship; she was a quiet girl, always friendly, courteous and respectful to others. Whitney was gracious in winning as well as losing. Whitney’s father, former National Cutting Horse Association President, Greg Welch, passed away on July 4, 2004, after a brief illness. Greg was a much-loved supporter of young cutters and served as a positive force in the lives of many youth members". The attached video was created this year and speaks to Legacy. Given the connection to Brock ISD and the book we have read this summer, I felt it only fitting to include it in this blog.  Please take a moment to hear some powerful words regarding legacy and a local family.

  1. Such a powerful message. I have been faced with health issues, and when I thought about the possibility of not getting better, I suddenly had a different perspective on how I choose to live my life. First of all it’s so much healthier to be more positive than negative about things. So many things are out of our control, and it’s easy to get down or frustrated with things... My goal is to be a good wife, mom, and coworker, live a life that serves others by being a positive role model and advocate for children, help others to be he best they can be, and to do the right thing when it comes to making important decisions. This is the legacy I hope to leave. ❤️

  2. I believe deeply in courtesy and positivity in speech and actions. There have been many obstacles to overcome in my personal and professional life and the legacy I wish to leave those I come in contact is one of the power of positive thinking. So much can be accomplished with positive energy following through and surrounding us. I hope to carry that wherever I go.

  3. My husband says “nobody loves like you”. I hope to be remembered as a truly caring, loving person. Spouse. Kids. Family. Students. Strangers. Colleagues. Neighbors. Animals. Everyone.

  4. I want to be a positive "LIGHT" that brightens people's day. Rather it be a smile, word of encouragement, or token of appreciation...I want others to remember me for my happiness and love of life.

  5. Losing those precious four girls had a huge impact on my life after losing my own mom to a drunk driver six months prior. 1998 was my first year at Brock, and that night will always be vivid in my mind. I want to be the best wife, mom, friend, and teacher that I can be. Time with loved ones is precious! I want my kids to know how much they are loved and attend as many of their activities as possible. It has hit me hard that I have a junior in high school and our time with her at home is running out. I would give anything to have a little more time with my own mom. I will be working hard to enjoy every single moment and to leave a legacy of love!

  6. My hope is that I will live each day loving and following my Lord and Savior's will for my life. Each day is a precious gift, and I hope that I can impact those around me by giving the best of me each and every moment. I strive to be a caring, loving mom, wife, daughter, friend, and teacher.

  7. I hope my legacy is one where I leave the world a better place through my actions and deeds. I am not sure whether this will take place through raising my own family, and being a good wife and mother, or with students the classroom. I'd like to be viewed as someone who "pays it forward" everyday, or at least tries to. ;)

  8. I pray that I leave a legacy of joy. Most importantly, I hope to share the joy of Jesus with others. I also hope that I share the joy of learning with my students. I pray that my students know that they are enough just as they are and that they walk out of my classroom feeling loved every day.

  9. Wow! What a moving video?! It's difficult for me "name" what I would like my legacy to be. I have thought about it a lot, however. I would like to be remembered as a follower of Christ and a person who tried to live in His image -- kind, generous, supportive, & non-judgmental. The last one being the most difficult to keep in line. I'm continuously working on all of these things hoping I can leave them as my legacy.

  11. I hope that my legacy is that my family, friends, students, players and any others that I have interacted with, can say I lived a life of integrity. I hope that they have seen that I have tried to do things the right way for the right reasons. I may fail sometimes, but I hope they saw I continued to strive to live a life of integrity.

  12. Many times I have reflected about how I will be remembered. I hope to be remembered for my willingness to help others.
